Rare but Not Alone: Understanding the Global Impact
Rare diseases might be uncommon, but collectively, they affect a significant portion of the global population. There are over 6,000 rare diseases identified worldwide, impacting an estimated 300 million people. This is six times the population of Kenya. Despite their rarity, these diseases represent a massive public health challenge due to the diversity and complexity of their impact.
The Genetic Connection: A Closer Look at the Causes
Around 72% of rare diseases have a genetic origin, while others stem from infections, allergies, or environmental factors. Unfortunately, 70% of these genetic diseases manifest during childhood, with a devastating statistic showing that 30% of children with rare diseases do not live to see their 5th birthday. The gravity of these numbers highlights the urgent need for awareness, research, and improved healthcare strategies.
The Treatment Gap: An Ongoing Challenge
One of the most pressing issues surrounding rare diseases is the lack of treatment options. Currently, only 5% of rare diseases have any form of treatment available, leaving the vast majority of patients without effective solutions. This gap in treatment is not just a healthcare issue but also a social and economic one, placing immense strain on families and communities.
