A Champion for Mental Health and Non-Communicable Diseases
Charity Muthoni Muturi dedicated her life to a cause close to her heart and vital to countless lives: advocating for mental health and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Her legacy as a passionate mental health activist, policy advisor, and community leader has left an indelible mark, especially within Kenya and across the global health community.
Charity’s work focused on elevating the voices of those living with mental health conditions and NCDs, bridging the gap between patients and policy makers. Her role as an advocate began with her own experiences, driving her to confront the stigma and lack of resources surrounding mental health, particularly in low-resource settings. She became an integral member of the NCD Alliance Global Advisory Committee, amplifying the need to address mental health alongside other chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, and hypertension.

One of her groundbreaking achievements was her advocacy for treating mental health as a core aspect of NCDs, leading to a broader and more integrated approach to healthcare. She tirelessly represented her community at major forums, from the United Nations to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the African Union. Her work involved not only raising awareness but also shaping policy initiatives that would offer more inclusive and holistic care.
Charity’s efforts extended to challenging the stigmas associated with mental health and empowering individuals through education and support systems. In Kenya, she was instrumental in promoting mental health awareness within religious organizations, community groups, and even the prison system, where she led educational programs for inmates and staff. Her commitment to decriminalizing suicide attempts in Kenya was a significant step toward compassionate mental health policies.
Through her advocacy, Charity highlighted the urgent need for systemic change, both in Kenya and globally. She called for better resource allocation, comprehensive mental health services, and inclusive healthcare policies. Her vision emphasized the importance of involving people living with NCDs and mental health conditions in conversations about healthcare solutions.
A Call to Action
Charity’s work is far from over. Her legacy calls for continued action to dismantle the barriers that prevent individuals from accessing the care and support they need. In her memory, let us advocate for mental health policies that offer dignity, empathy, and practical support. Let us carry forward her mission by supporting mental health education, fighting stigma, and demanding healthcare systems that recognize the full spectrum of NCDs, including mental health.
Charity Muthoni Muturi’s life reminds us of the power of compassion, resilience, and advocacy. May we honor her by committing to a world where everyone, regardless of their mental health status, can access the care and respect they deserve.
